BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

The Bible only lists two titles of leadership in the local church: Elders and Deacons. The following is a brief description of each.

ELDERS
Elders (also known as shepherds, overseers, pastors), are men who are responsible for the overall pastoral leadership, governing, oversight and teaching of the congregation (Ephesians 4:11-13, I Timothy 3:1-7, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:1-4). An elder is called to care for Jesus church by teaching scripture, preaching the gospel, and leading the church.

DEACONS
A deacon serves those in need and helps to meet physical needs in the congregation (Acts 6:1-7; I Timothy 3: 8-13). Deacons offer help to those in crisis by assessing their physical needs and working to find practical solutions. Unlike elders who are responsible for teaching the gospel, administering healing prayer, and overseeing the church, deacons focus on extending mercy and compassion.
